Tax Collector's Policies
Checks should be made payable to the "Tax Collector Town of Thomaston." Third party checks are not accepted.
If an immediate DMV release is needed: If payment is made via our online payment system or by a personal check, there will be a 10 (business) day waiting period before the release to DMV will be processed.
On March 31, 2010, at a Thomaston Town Meeting, an ordinance was adopted that requires ANY delinquent motor vehicle bill be charged a $2.00 delinquent fee.
Per Connecticut State Statute C.G.S. §§ 12-130, failure to receive a tax bill does not invalidate the tax. If you have not received a tax bill by July 1st, or received a bill in error, please contact the Tax Office at 860-283-4271 as soon as possible.
If the payment due date of August 1st or February 1st is on a weekend, the grace period is extended to the next business day.
Failure to pay in full on or before August 1 or February 1 will result in a late payment with interest charged at 1.5% per month (18% per year) computed from the due date of July 1 or January 1, per Connecticut State Statute C.G.S. §§ 12-145. Minimum interest charge is $2.00.
If you misplaced a tax bill(s), you may print a copy of your bill by clicking on the Pay Bills and Tax Information link below or call the Tax Office at 860-283-4271.
Postdated checks are not accepted.
Interest cannot be waived.
U.S. postmark date is used to determine interest.
Past due taxes must be paid before current taxes. The oldest list year is paid first (Connecticut State Statute C.G.S. §§ 12-144b), except for prior years that are in litigation or predate a pending bankruptcy.
Any payment received will be applied to fees, liens, and interest first, and then to tax (Connecticut State Statute C.G.S. §§ 12-144b).
