SERVICES PROVIDED
Budget Counseling
From time to time, reviewing a household budget and making adjustment recommendations can ease financial strain. Our office provides one to one budgeting advise for those households that are struggling.
Social Service Crisis Fund
This fund provides short-term emergency financial relief to victims of crisis or disasters. Our crisis fund is used for residents that have an immediate financial crisis, such as utility shut-off, help with rent due or any other situation that is crucial and needs to be addressed immediately. These funds are donated from our town residents to help those in need. Our funds are extremely limited and we are always in need of on-going donations to be sure we always have this fund available. Checks can be made out to the Thomaston Crisis Fund. We appreciate your generosity and continued support.
Emergency Food
We keep a small supply of food on hand in our office for those in immediate need. Our food is supplied by private donations and the food pantry. We always welcome any non-perishable food item or gift cards to nearby supermarkets or gas stations.
Food Pantry
The Thomaston Pantry is not part of the Social Service Office or operated under the Town of Thomaston. We, however, take in applications for residents that feel the pantry would be a benefit to them. We usually can answer questions concerning the pantry as well. Any residents interested in obtaining non-perishables, you should first contact Social Services.
Thomaston Pantry promotes better nutrition by overseeing the distribution of food to low-income families and qualifying individuals.
Pantry Dates and Times: Third Tuesday of the month 6:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. Third Wednesday of the month 9:00 a.m. 10:30 a.m.

Energy Assistance
Low income residents who need help paying their heating bills can turn to two state-administered, federally funded programs: The CT Energy Assistance Program (CEAP) and if funding is available, Contingency Heating Assistance Program (CHAP) We take applications during the months of Sept. - May. Income eligibility and asset limits apply. Documentation is required. Income eligibility is determined by annualizing the households income for 4 weeks immediately preceding the application. A household is considered automatically income eligible for CEAP if all its members participate in the Temporary Family Assistance, State Supplement to the Aged, Blind and disabled or the food stamp program. Households may qualify for CEAP if their incomes are at or below 150% of federal poverty guidelines based on the number of people in the household. Households with at least one elderly person age 60 or older can be eligible if their income is at or below 200% of federal guidelines.
File of Life
The file of life kit includes a refrigerator magnet folder, another folder for your car or purse and a sticker to place on your door to alert emergency staff that you have File of Life. This enables medics to obtain a quick medical history when the patient is unable to offer one. Provided by a grant from Thomaston Savings Bank.
Holiday Gift Assistance
Our young families struggle making ends meet and the holiday season is particularly difficult. The Thomaston Christmas Committee is a group of volunteers that manages and collects and distributes gifts for these families. To be a recipient, you must apply at the Social Service Office and be income eligible. This is an incredible committee, which many participate in a variety of ways. Town residents, businesses and groups participate in the gift collection.
New Beginnings School Clothes Program
New Beginnings is an Ecumenical Program designed to provide children in need with new school clothes. Forms are available to eligible families.
Rent Rebates
The Rental Assistance Program provides subsidies to disabled or seniors (home owner or renter) working in conjunction with Town Assessors office. The Rent Rebate is a state program in which seniors and disabled can receive from $150 to $700 back from rent and utilities paid through the previous year. Applications are taken in this office May thru September.
